The port of Capbreton, or the “city of 100 captains,” emerged at the mouth of the Adour and had up to 8,000 inhabitants in the 14th century. During the Second Empire, a flushing basin was created from Lake Hossegor. The pier, a 190-meter-long jetty, was also developed. Later, MIACA developed the marina, evolving the original fishing port. The current five basins of Capbreton port were built between 1973 and 1991. Facing the Atlantic Ocean, Capbreton is intimately linked to seawater and fishing. The town drew its prosperity from distant whale and cod fishing. Furthermore, the inhabitants excelled in fish preservation and drying activities.

The Importance of Fishing in Capbreton Port

Alongside recreational boating, fishing is the main economic activity of the town. Capbreton’s professional fishermen have a fleet of 19 boats with which they practice artisanal fishing using nets, bottom trawls, etc. The boats (trawlers, purse seiners, etc.) are between 9 m and 15 m long. Each boat can carry up to 4-5 sailors. The fishing zones are located near the southern coasts of the Landes up to the north of the Arcachon basin.

As for the fish market, it takes place daily from 9 AM to 12 PM, and from 3 PM to 6 PM, depending on arrivals. You can find various types of fish and seafood at the market, including sole, sea bream, squid, pouting, etc. According to unanimous reviews, locally caught seasonal fish are of unparalleled freshness and deliciousness. It’s worth noting that the fishermen of Capbreton port, in the Landes region, sell their catch directly without going through an auction, setting their own prices.
