A Brief History of Contis Lighthouse

Built in 1863, the Contis Lighthouse is the only lighthouse in Les Landes and plays a crucial role in navigation along the Atlantic coast. The Contis Lighthouse, initially painted white, acquired its iconic black spiral bands in the 1930s. In 1944, it narrowly escaped complete destruction during the bombings of World War II, with German forces only damaging the lantern. The Contis Lighthouse, now automated and operating independently since the time it was manned by keepers, continues to guide ships with its powerful light.

Visiting Contis Lighthouse

Visitors can explore the Contis Lighthouse by climbing the 184 cast-iron steps of its 38-meter tower to reach the lantern, located 52 meters above sea level. The ascent of the Contis Lighthouse is amply rewarded with an exceptional panorama: to the west, the immensity of the Atlantic Ocean stretches as far as the eye can see, while to the east, the vast expanse of the Landes forest envelops the landscape.

This ascent of the Contis Lighthouse offers not only a physical activity but also a history lesson and an opportunity to capture spectacular landscapes.

Resin Tapping Demonstration at Contis Lighthouse

At the Contis Lighthouse, visitors have the unique opportunity to attend free resin tapping demonstrations with Pierre. Resin tapping, a traditional practice in Les Landes, involves extracting resin from pine trees for various uses. A resin tapping demonstration at the Contis Lighthouse is an excellent way to understand not only the historical importance of this practice, but also to connect with the culture and traditions of Les Landes.
