\"Pine\"<\/p>\n

Why were pine trees planted in the Landes?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The <\/span>Landes landscape<\/b> has not always been a <\/span>pine forest<\/b>. In the early <\/span> 19th century<\/b>it was a <\/span>plain of wet moorland<\/b> and <\/span>swamps<\/b>deemed \"unproductive\". The <\/span>shepherds<\/b> guided their <\/span>herds<\/b> on <\/span>stilts<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The change came with the <\/span>law of June 19, 1857<\/b>prompted by <\/span>Napoleon III<\/b>to <\/span>reclaim land<\/b> and <\/span>and develop<\/b>. L'<\/span>State<\/b> obliged <\/span>communes in Gironde and Landes<\/b> \u00e0 <\/span>drain<\/b> and <\/span>seed<\/b> nearly a million hectares, mainly of maritime pine. <\/span>maritime pine<\/b>adapted to <\/span>poor soil<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

This decision has transformed <\/span>landscapes<\/b> and the<\/span>local economy<\/b>making <\/span>Landes trees<\/b> the driving force behind the<\/span>wood and resin industry<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Which tree is emblematic of the Landes region?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Unsurprisingly, the king of the <\/span>forest<\/b> is the <\/span>maritime pine<\/b> (<\/span>Pinus pinaster<\/b>). It makes up almost all of the massif, which is now the world's largest <\/span>artificial forest<\/b> d'<\/span>Europe<\/b>. This tree, which can reach <\/span> 30 meters<\/b> recognizable by its long <\/span>long needles<\/b> and thick bark. <\/span>thick, fissured<\/b> bark.<\/span><\/p>\n

Initially exploited for its <\/span>resin<\/b> (the <\/span>gemmage<\/b>), it has become the mainstay of a highly efficient timber industry. Thanks to over <\/span> 60 years of genetic improvement<\/b>carried out by institutes such as<\/span>INRA<\/b>,<\/span> productivity<\/span><\/a> has risen sharply. These <\/span> Landes trees<\/b> are managed as a veritable <\/span>culture<\/b>with <\/span>planting and cutting cycles<\/b> to supply the industries of the Aquitaine region.<\/span><\/p>\n

What other types of trees are present in the forest?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The <\/span>Landes forest<\/b> is far from being a <\/span>monoculture<\/b>. The <\/span> light cover of pine trees<\/b> allows many other species <\/span>species<\/b> to thrive. According to<\/span> National Forest Inventory (IGN)<\/span><\/a>the proportion of stands where <\/span>hardwoods<\/b> has risen sharply, from <\/span>12 %<\/b> in the 80s to <\/span>33 %<\/b> over the period 2013-2017 for the <\/span>Landes and Gironde departments<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

This <\/span>diversification<\/b> strengthens the resilience of the massif, enriches the soil and promotes <\/span>biodiversity<\/b> biodiversity.<\/span><\/p>\n\n
