\n The Landes<\/b>, a department in southwestern France, is brimming with all sorts of activities and entertainment.
\n They’re sure to keep surprising you and have some wonderful surprises in store<\/b>.
\nWe’re going to introduce you to Course Landaise<\/b>, the region’s official sport, which features racing cows, thrills, and local traditions deeply rooted in the Landes<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Introducing Course Landaise<\/h2>\n

Course Landaise is a high-level sport<\/b> practiced in an arena. It involves provoking a heifer and then skillfully dodging it<\/g>. The person in charge of this role is called an “\u00e9carteur”<\/g>. They must wait until the last moment before performing their move or aerial acrobatics over the animal<\/b>, aiming to get as close as possible.
\n Do not confuse Course Landaise with bullfighting<\/b>. Traditional Course Landaise events use purebred Spanish heifers, known as “coursi\u00e8res”<\/b>, whereas bullfighting uses bulls, which are killed at the end of the spectacle<\/b>.
\nThis typically Gascon sport<\/b> is mainly found at village festivals in the Landes department, as well as in parts of the Gers<\/b>.
\nBeyond being an official sport, it’s a magnificent spectacle that brings together various Landes cattle farms<\/b> (known as “ganaderias”<\/b>). These farms are represented in formal races and competitions by forming teams, called “cuadrillas”<\/b>, distinguished by colors. Each team consists of seven \u00e9carteurs, two trainers, a jumper, and a cordier, who guides the cow in the arena<\/b>.
\nThe thrilling spectacle lasts a little over two hours<\/b> and is governed by a federation<\/b>. An official anthem, “La Marche Caz\u00e9rienne”<\/b>, has been played at the beginning and end of each Course Landaise since the early 20th<\/sup> century.
